One in every two households in Maracaibo reported to have at least one family member outside of Venezuela, almost all of whom send remittances to help purchase food, according to a survey conducted by the Commission for Human Rights of the State of Zulia (Codhez) during early September 2018. 48.9% of households in Maracaibo report an average of 1.45 family members –including only a father, mother, romantic partner, child or sibling - who have left the country per family. The socio-economic strata that have reported the highest rates of family members who emigrated are stratum C (57,6%) and A-B (55%), closely followed by stratum D (46.4%) and to a lesser extent stratum E (28.5%).

Migrants send remittances to guarantee their family’s access to food

93.3% of households with family members outside of the country receive remittances, 46% do so ‘regularly’ and 47.3% ‘once in a while’. Every strata received economic assistance from the family members abroad - A-B (81.2%), C (94.5%), D (94.2%) and E (89.6%) – a need which has become universal across socio-economic classes. The households which receive remittances most regularly are those in strata C (55.6%) and D (46.5%) in contrast to strata E (35.4%) and A-B (18.2%).4.
