74.5% of households in the municipality of Maracaibo reported that, in the last three months, both children and adults felt hunger but did not eat. This was one of the most notable findings of the Survey on Food Security in the city of Maracaibo conducted by the Commission for Human Rights of the State of Zulia (Codhez), which was based on the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA). The survey indicates that the majority of Maracaibo’s population suffers from food insecurity, revealing the extent to which the Venezuelan Government is not guaranteeing the right to food.

81.9% of Maracaibo’s population’s belong to the lowest socio-economic classes

Maracaibo is second most populous city of Venezuela, and a majority of its residents belong to the lowest socio-economic strata. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) projected Maracaibo to have a population of 1,728,252 inhabitants by 2018, forming 423,591 households.  The results of our study indicates the population has the following socio-economic distribution by class: A-B (2.5%), C (15.6%) , D(67.1%) and E(14.8%).

Our survey was conducted between August 30th and September 6th in 800 households in the 18 districts (known as parroquias in Venezuela) of the city. Of the households surveyed, 87.2% reported that their daily income was $0.82 USD or lower, which represents less than half of the poverty line ($1.92 USD) established by the World Bank, a measurement which is also used by the United Nations to measure poverty according to the first objective of the Sustainable Development Goals.
